About This Countdown Timer

Desaturated, grainy, shot from a rooftop at some ungodly hour, and it might still be the most honest portrait of Manhattan I have seen. With the color gone there is nothing left but structure. Fire escapes. Water towers. The canyon of a street running south until it smears into light, every car turned into a thin streak by a long exposure. The Empire State sits back there like a lighthouse, and up close the older buildings wear their age openly, brick and cornices and windows that do not quite line up. I love that about this city. It never pretends to be new. Every block is a layer cake of decades, and at night, stripped down to grey, you can read all of them at once. Somebody is still awake in half those windows and you will never find out why. That is the deal with looking down at a city. You get the beauty without the noise. No color, no distraction, nothing to look at but the shape of the thing and the way the light falls on it. I would hang this in a hallway, somewhere you pass a hundred times a day, because it rewards the second look far more than the first.
