About This Countdown Timer

There's no sound like a stadium with nobody in it. I got in early once, before the gates filled, and the whole place just sat there breathing. Fifty thousand empty blue seats, the grass cut into perfect stripes, that interlocking NY painted so clean it looked fake. The foul poles. The chalk. A groundskeeper dragging a hose somewhere out past right field. You grow up watching this place on TV with the crowd roaring, so the silence is almost uncomfortable — like walking into a party before anyone's arrived. I stood at the rail and tried to imagine the noise, the seventh-inning stretch, the way the whole bowl shakes when someone goes deep. Couldn't quite do it. The emptiness was too complete. But that's what I liked. Seats folded up in long rows, the grass mowed into stripes, a groundskeeper somewhere dragging a hose across the dirt because the season is not over for him. For ten minutes it was just me and a field built for drama, all dressed up with nowhere to go. If you ever get the chance to see a ballpark before first pitch, take it. It's the only time the place belongs to nobody, and somehow to everyone at once.
