About This Countdown Timer

New York has a way of hiding its famous things behind scaffolding, so when the Flatiron shows up clean and bare against a blue like this, you stop walking. I did. Mid-block, coffee in hand, probably in somebody's way. But look at it — that absurd wedge of stone just standing there, holding its ground where Broadway cuts across Fifth like it's daring the street to argue. Everyone calls it the Flatiron because it looks like an iron, and once you see it you can't unsee it. The detail up close is what got me. Rows of windows, little ledges, the way the sun picks out the trim on the narrow end. It was built in 1902 and people thought it would blow over. It didn't. A hundred-plus years later it's still the most photogenic accident in the city. If you're nearby on a clear day, walk the block and look up. There's a reason painters keep coming back to this corner. Some buildings are just buildings. The wedge only makes sense from this angle, that thin prow splitting the intersection like the bow of a ship that got stuck and decided to stay. Traffic crawls around it. Nobody looks up. This one's a dare.
