About This Countdown Timer

Two things face each other across the Rhine in Cologne and neither of them is subtle. The cathedral, black with a century of soot, twin spires standing up like a pair of exclamation marks. And the Hohenzollern Bridge, four steel arches lit amber, its railings so thick with love locks that the metal has basically become a wall of names. I walked across one evening and stopped halfway because the view back at the cathedral was too good to keep moving for. You can hear the river under the trains. You can hear the locks clinking when the wind picks up. It is a strange pairing, this. Faith on one bank, engineering on the other, and a few hundred thousand padlocks in between representing nothing more complicated than people hoping something lasts. I did not add one. Not this time. But I understood the impulse completely. That is what a city does to you at dusk. Trains still cross here, slow and heavy, and the whole structure hums when they do, a low note you feel through the handrail and into your teeth. It makes you want to leave a mark on something that will outlive you.
