About This Countdown Timer

Dusk is the best hour to be near water and this is the reason. The sky goes lavender, the bridge turns into a long black lattice, and everything underneath starts to glow, restaurants, boat decks, the little yellow windows of houseboats, all of it doubled in the swell. I stood on the far bank for a while and watched the ferries and fishing boats knock against their moorings. Ropes creaking. Somebody laughing on a patio. A gull being a public menace. This is the sort of scene that rarely photographs as well as it feels, but this one came close. What I like is the contrast. Heavy steel above, all that delicate light below. Engineering and warmth, stacked on top of each other. Cities need both. You cannot have the restaurants without the bridge, and you cannot have the bridge without somebody deciding it was worth building in the first place. I would come back with a coffee and no plan. Bench, water, light fading out. You can hear the steel ticking as it cools down, all that mass letting go of the day one tick at a time. There is a particular peace that only shows up between sunset and dark, and it never stays long.
