About This Countdown Timer

Four masts, a hundred little flags, and a sky the color of wet slate. I reached the pier just as the light was giving up, and this old barque was already tied off, ropes thick as a man's arm, canvas furled tight, every yardarm strung with pennants snapping in the wind like a row of small arguments. The cranes behind her were orange and rusted and patient, and they looked like they had been waiting fifty years for a ship like this and had finally gotten one. It is strange to stand beside something this big and this old and remember it crossed oceans on wind alone, no engine, no satellites, just rope and stubbornness and a captain who did not sleep. Somebody's jacket hung over a rail. Somebody's boots were still on the deck. That is the thing. She is not a museum piece behind glass. She still goes out. She still takes on water and smells like tar and old paint and salt. If you ever get the chance to walk one of these decks, say yes, put your hand on the rail, and feel how much of the world was moved by wood.
