About This Countdown Timer

Every city has its backdrop, but Portland has a mountain, and on clear evenings Mount Hood floats over downtown like it's been painted onto the sky. I caught it at dusk, the snow on the peak catching the last pink light while the city below switched on its office windows one by one, all green and gold. The trees in the foreground were pure black silhouettes, framing the whole thing like a postcard someone actually got right. I don't know why this view hit me so hard. Maybe because it's so unassuming. Portland doesn't posture. It's a working town that happens to have a volcano living next door, and most nights the clouds hide it entirely, so when it shows up you feel like you've been let in on something. If you're here, find a high street around sunset on a clear day. Wait. The mountain will tell you when it's ready. Mount Hood sits out there like a fact you cannot argue with, snow on the summit even in August, the city lights small and nervous underneath it, all blue and gold. Then go get a coffee, because you're in Portland, and that's basically the whole personality.
