About This Countdown Timer

There is a moon in this picture and it is doing most of the work, which feels unfair to the church. But that is how Dusseldorf goes at night. You walk the riverbank, the Rhine slides past wide and dark, and the old town sits on the far side like a row of lit windows on a shelf. St. Lambertus with its twisted spire. The little round tower. A bank glowing gold, a modern office block glowing blue behind it, six hundred years of architecture trying to share one frame. I had no destination that night. That is the best way to see a river city. Pick a direction, follow the water, stop when something looks good. My shoes were wet and I did not care. Somewhere behind me a tram went past. Somebody was playing a guitar badly and honestly. This is not the postcard version of Germany, the castles and the beer halls. The moon path on the water is the brightest thing in the frame, a wide silver road leading straight at the bank, and every ripple breaks it apart and puts it back together. It is a Tuesday night in a working city, and it is better.
