About This Countdown Timer

Sometimes you don't photograph a city, you photograph the feeling of being tired in one. This is that. Everything soft, everything out of focus, the towers reduced to blue shapes and the windows to floating points of light, like stars that fell into a grid and forgot how to go home. I took something like this once at the end of a long day, too exhausted to frame anything properly, and it ended up being my favorite shot of the trip. There's honesty in blur. It's how the city actually looks when your eyes are heavy and the cab is warm and you're half-asleep against the window. Sharpness is a lie we tell ourselves. The real thing is glow, noise, movement, all smeared together into something almost gentle. If you ever find yourself up high and worn out, don't fight it. Let the focus go. Take the blurry picture. Rain on a window, focus set to nothing, and the whole city dissolves into soft coins of light. Sometimes that is the best portrait of a place you can get. You'll look at it later and remember the exhaustion and the quiet and the strange blue peace of a city that never really sleeps.
