About This Countdown Timer

This is what a city looks like when you give it a few seconds to move. Stand still, open the shutter, and the cars turn into ribbons, red going one way, white going the other, the whole road becoming a current that you can suddenly see. I love long exposure for exactly this reason. It reveals the bloodstream of a place. Everyone driving home, everyone late, everyone heading somewhere they probably don't want to be. The stone arches on the left hold the light like an old bridge should, and the palms stand up dark and ragged against the sodium glow, and somewhere a bus is idling and somebody's waiting. It's not a beautiful scene, exactly. It's an honest one. If you ever find yourself on an overpass at night with a camera and a railing to rest on, try it. Count to five. Let the traffic paint. Two lanes, opposite directions, two colors, and a pedestrian bridge above it all where somebody is standing very still for a very long time. You'll get a picture that looks like the city's heartbeat, and you'll understand, for a second, how much is always moving underneath the quiet.
