About This Countdown Timer

Big Ben does not really need my help, but here we are. Purple sky, gold stone, the river doing that slow black roll underneath, Westminster Bridge with its lamps lined up like a row of small moons. I have walked this stretch a dozen times and it still stops me. There is a reason every tourist with a phone ends up here, and it is not just the postcard thing. It is scale. Parliament is enormous and ornate and slightly ridiculous, all those spires arguing with each other, and the clock tower simply stands at the end of it being correct. Four faces. Three hundred and thirty four steps if you are unlucky enough to climb them. The bell that gave the tower its nickname weighs more than a small house. I like that this view has been painted and filmed so many times that the image almost feels like a memory I did not earn. Still, standing there in the cold, hearing the hour strike across the water, none of that matters. The clock is lit from the inside, so the face glows like paper held up to a lamp, and you can read the time from the far bank. It is just loud and old and very, very London.
