About This Countdown Timer

Washington at dusk is a strange place. All that white stone and all those straight lines, and the sky doing a slow fade from indigo to nearly black behind the dome. I got here after the tourists had mostly gone and the lights had come up, and for about ten minutes the whole building belonged to me, one guy with a tripod, and a security guard who clearly wanted to go home. The dome glows. That is the first thing you notice. It sits up there like a lantern, the statue on top lit from below, the colonnade underneath all warm and gold while the sky behind is still blue. It was designed to be photographed and it knows it. I am not usually sentimental about government buildings. Too much has happened inside them. But the scale of the thing, the steps, the lawn, the way it holds the hill, you can feel why people built it. Whether it lives up to itself is a separate question. Architecture makes promises. The grass in front is that unreal green that only exists on government lawns and golf courses, kept alive by sprinklers and stubbornness. Politics decides what to do with them.
