About This Countdown Timer

Some lawns are just grass. This one isn't. The first time I crossed it, I was late for something and still slowed down, because the light was doing that thing where the dome goes pale gold and the columns throw long shadows, and suddenly you understand exactly why every college brochure looks the way it does. Columbia's Low Library sits up there like it's been expecting you all morning. Students sprawl on the green with laptops and iced coffee, someone's playing guitar badly, a tour group clusters near the steps. It's the kind of scene that makes you want to be twenty-one again, or at least borrow a book and pretend. I sat on the wall for an hour once, doing nothing productive, watching clouds move over that dome. Nobody kicked me out. That's the magic of a campus in summer — it lets you linger. If you're ever uptown on a clear afternoon, walk through. Stand on the steps. Look back across the lawn toward the city. For a minute the noise disappears, and it's just you, the grass, and a very serious building insisting you have potential.
