About This Countdown Timer

The whole city looked like it was dipped in honey. I don't know what time it was, some hour between afternoon and evening when the sun gets low and the air over the water turns thick and gold, and every tower on the peninsula glowed like it had a lamp inside. From up here the marina turns into rows of tiny white boats, the inlet goes flat and mirror-like, and the mountains just disappear into that warm haze. It's not a sharp view. It's soft, almost smeared, the way old film looks. Maybe that's why I like it. Cities usually present themselves in high definition, every window and wire in focus. This one let itself blur. I sat on a balcony with a drink I didn't finish and watched the light slide down the towers, slow, patient, like it had all the time in the world. If you ever get a golden evening over a harbour, don't do anything. Just watch. Seawall, marina, a few kayaks cutting thin white lines across the inlet, everything slowed down to the speed of a Sunday afternoon nobody is in a hurry to end. Those hours are short, and they're the ones you end up missing.
